EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
