RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
