Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
