The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
