Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
